Did you know that Whitewater is part of the Rock River basin and UW-Whitewater must meet MS4 requirements? This fact may surprise some area residents and University of Wisconsin-Whitewater campus members since Whitewater is not on the Rock River. However, the Wisconsin DNR considers the UW-Whitewater campus as an MS4 permittee since the campus population exceeds 10,000 people (based on overall enrollment). Large areas of impervious surfaces such as parking lots, buildings, and sidewalks across campus discharge stormwater runoff into Whitewater Creek, which is part of the Rock River watershed. Check out UW-Whitewater’s Campus Stormwater Management website to learn more about the campus efforts related to managing stormwater and ways to get involved.
